With imagery taken from the Katha Upanisad, Lord Krsna portrays the entire universe as the Asvattha or pipal tree with roots above and branches below. In this chapter, Krsna urges you to cut apart this firmly rooted tree of the material world (and desires) with the weapon of detachment. He expounds the nature of Brahman, how It pervades the manifested world and describes It as a trinity of ksara, aksara and Uttama Purusa - perishable, imperishable and the Supreme Spirit.
