How do you cut yourself off from instant pleasure?

You don’t need to cut yourself off from instant pleasure. The Bhagavad Gita is not taking pleasure away from you. It says that whenever you want to engage in sense enjoyment, which is what gives instant pleasure, then consult the intellect. If the intellect says it is perfectly okay for you to go ahead, then you go ahead and enjoy that instant pleasure without feeling guilty and without any negative repercussions.

We can understand this better with an example. Let’s say you are a diabetic patient and you have already eaten a lot of sweets so your sugar levels are high. But you still want to eat a piece of cake. Your intellect will say no. You should follow the advice of the intellect. When you follow the intellect, your enjoyment actually gets enhanced rather than denied. The Bhagavad Gita does not deny you the pleasures that come from sense contact.
